Walkie Rider

Program Information

Walkie/Rider Training

A walkie rider, also known as a walkie-rider pallet jack or electric pallet jack, is a piece of material handling equipment commonly used in warehouses, distribution centers, and other industrial settings. It is designed to assist in the movement of palletized loads, making it easier for operators to transport heavy loads over short distances. Walkie riders are typically powered by electric motors, which means they don’t require manual pushing or pulling like traditional manual pallet jacks. One distinguishing feature of a walkie rider is a rider platform that allows an operator to stand on or walk behind the machine while controlling its movement. This provides greater control and efficiency compared to walking alongside a manual pallet jack.

OSHA Standards Regarding Walkie/Riders

Updated in September 2021, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) in the United States does not have specific standards that are exclusively dedicated to walkie riders or electric pallet jacks. Instead, OSHA provides general guidelines and regulations related to powered industrial trucks, which include walkie riders. These guidelines are outlined in OSHA’s standard 29 CFR 1910.178, titled “Powered Industrial Trucks.” OSHA requires that all operators of powered industrial trucks, including walkie riders, receive proper training and certification before operating the equipment. Training should cover both formal instruction (e.g., classroom training) and practical training (e.g., hands-on operation).   It’s essential for employers and operators to be aware of and comply with OSHA regulations and any updates or changes that may have occurred after my last update in September 2021. Regulations and standards can change, so I recommend checking the latest OSHA resources or consulting with OSHA directly for the most up-to-date information regarding safety standards for walkie riders and powered industrial trucks.

What Will I receive after Completing The Online Walkie Rider Training Course?

When students complete an online walkie rider training course that adheres to OSHA standards and regulations, they will receive several documents and materials to verify their training and compliance. These documents are essential for both the students and their employers to demonstrate that proper training has been conducted.

Certificate of Completion

This is the primary document that students receive after successfully completing the online walkie rider training.

Walkie Rider License

You will also receive a wallet license I.D that you be able to print off after completing and passing the online exam. It’s important for students to keep these documents in a safe and easily accessible place, as they may be required by employers or regulatory authorities to demonstrate compliance with OSHA training requirements. Additionally, employers often keep records of employee training, so students should also provide copies of their certificates to their employers for documentation purposes.

What Will I learn Taking the Online Course?

Walkie Rider Components. Pre-Operational Inspection Safe Operating Practices Load Handling Hazard Identification Safety Guidelines Emergency Procedures Battery Charging and Maintenance Proper Parking and Shutdown   Upon completing an online walkie rider training course, participants should have the knowledge and skills necessary to safely operate these powered industrial trucks, reducing the risk of accidents, injuries, and property damage in the workplace. It’s essential to ensure that the training course chosen is comprehensive and aligns with OSHA standards and regulations to meet legal and safety requirements.
